Gate of Benevolent Longevity

Eentering the eastern place gate, we will be greeted by an arch inscribed with Renshoumed (gate of benevolent longevity) in Chinese and Manchu language. Situated between the eastern palace gate and the Hall of Benevolent Longevity, the arch was nothing like the ordinary tedious palace gate but emphasizing the mystery and state-liness of the "Hall of Golden Chimes" of the imperial garden.

A green stone was placed on each side of the gate, the top of the left one like monkey and that of the right one a pig. Usually called the Stones of Pig and Monkey, they guard the imperial gate, symbolizing Sun Wukong and Zhu Wuneng figures in the fairy tale. They are part of the interesting stone scenes of the Summer Palace. Also, there are two rows of symmetric architectures beside the gate, court rooms for officials on duty.
