The
Summer Palace served mainly as the temporary dwelling place for Cixi at the end
of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Thus, the living quarters
of Cixi, Emperor Guangxu and the empress Longyu compose the main part of the imperial
living area, the major part for our tour. Located to the north of the eastern
bank of Kunming Lake, the imperial living area comprises traditional single-story
house with rows of rooms around the four sides of a courtyard, all linked by verandas
.Having appreciated the lovely landscape of the Kunming Lake, we can walk northward
and enter the first courtyard, Yulan Palace, dwelling palace of Emperor Guangxu.
