Summer Palace after Liberation

After the liberation in 1949, the Summer Palace turned on a new leaf in life. The People's Government began comprehensive renovation in 1951.

The garbage was cleared away, stone balusters by the side of the lake reinforced and various dilapidated ancient architectures restored, such as the Foxing Pavilion, Dehe Garden, Tingli Hall and Yulan Chamber. And the aplace was listed among the first group of important cultural relices to be given special protection by the State Council in 1961. Thanks to the two large-scale projects to eliminate the silt of the Kunming Lake in 1960 and 1990, Kunming Lake became a vast expanse of fresh water again.

And in 1998, the Summer Palace was put on the World Cultural Heritage List by UNESCO and praised as symbol of one of the world civilizations. It won the world acclaim. Today, the Summer Palace is attracting tourists worldwide with its glamorous ancient garden and impressive vigor.
