Zhao Yun's Fight in Changbanpo

Depicting a story of the The Romance of the Three Kingdoms, the painting records a battle between Liu Bei and Cao Cao. With only 3,000 soldiers, Liu Bei withdrew toward Jiangling, knowing the advantage Cao Cao one night, Liu Bei lost contact with his family members. At dawn, only a few hundred of soldiers guarded him.

General Zhao Yun charged the enemy alone in search of Liu Bei's family. After killing Xia Hou'en,one of CaoCao's generals, Zhao Yun eventually found Liu Bei's wife Mi and his eldest son A Dou at a broken wall.

Entrusting her son to Zhao Yun, Ms. Mi committed suicide by jumping into a nearby well. in order not to distract Zhao. Holding the little child, Zhao Yun fought bravely a against the army of Cao Cao. As is shown in the painting the general in white holding a child was Zhao Yun, surrounded by the soldiers of Cao Cao. Watching the battle up on the hill, Cao Cao praised Zhao, "What a courageous general!" Hence, he ordered to capture him alive. Zhao Yun finally managed to escape with the son of Liu Bei, cut down two huge banners and killed over 50 of Cao Cao's soldiers. The battle of Changbanpo has since been considered a famous battle in the history of Three Kingdoms.

When meeting Liu Bei, Zhao Yun found that the little child was still asleep. His brave act therefore spread widely.
