This is another story with respect to YueFei, the national hero of the Southern
Song Dynasty. A fatherless child, Yue Fei was born into a poor family when the
corrupt dynasty was threatened with domestic trouble and foreign invasion. Yue
Fei endeavored to learn martial arts, aiming to protect the nation and its people.
Yue Fei and several friends went one year to take the national military exam
in Bianliang (currently Kaifeng City), which was then the capital city. One examinee,Liang
Gui, was a descendent of the emperor of the Later Zhou Dynasty. The wealthy and
powerful Liang Gui had already bribed the corrupt examiners except General Zong
Ze who made up his mind to choose good talent for the country.
Considering Liang Gui's noble origin, Yue Fei dared not to try his best. At
first, he did not fight back. After a while, he jumped out and required a contract
be signed claiming that nobody would be responsible for the other's death during
the fight. Yue Fei then brought his talent into full play before he thrust at
Liang Gui's heart and killed the latter. The three bribed examiners shouted out,
demanding that Yue Fei be beheaded. In a rage, Zong Ze went all out to save Yue
Fei and other examinees also cried out to support him. The three examiners had
to set Yue Fei free, and the story spread throughout the capital city.
As depicted in the painting, Yue Fei thrust with his spear on the left, and
the one falling down from the horse was Liang Gui.
