The historical novel Tale of Yuefei recorded how
Yue Fei, the patriotic general of the Southern Song Dynasty, combated
the invasion of Kingdom Jin. The painting here depicted the well-
known battle in Zhuxian County.
Jin Wushu, the fourth son of the marshal of Kingdom Jin, closed
in on Zhuxian County, a key commercial county , with over 600,000
soldiers. confronting Jin Wushu. Repeated failures lowered the
morale of the Jin army. When his military counselor claimed that
the new battle array was bound to defeat Yue Fei, the peeved Jin
Wushu sent a letter of armistice to Yue Fei, who agreed with a
one-month armistice.
One month went by before the decisive battle commenced. Yue Fei
and another general attacked both sides of the Jin army. Suddenly,
the enemy changed their battle array into two parts, connecting
with each other like two long snakes. The besieged army of the
Song Dynasty was soon to lose the battle when three young generals
arrived to save them from jeopardy. They charged bravely and shattered
the enemy positions, coupled with the other four courageous generals,
who brought their skills into full play. The army of the Song
Dynasty obtained decisive success reducing the numbers of the
enemy to less than 6,000.
The battle won great fame for the army of Yue Fei. People took
delight in talking about the eight courageous generals. The painting
here demonstrated the vehement scenes of the battle.
