Ancestral Temple of Yelu Chucai


The tomb and ancestral temple OF Yelu Chucai (1190-1244), minister of Yuan Dynasty,, opposites the Zhichun Pavilion. The Khitan Yelu Chuai played an important role in the founding of Yuan Dynasty. His ability and wisdom won the favor of Genghis Khan. Many rules and regulations then were formulated by him.Died in 1244, he was buried at the bank of Wengshan water.

More than 500 years later, the Emperor Qianlong Came arcoss the tomb when enlarging the Kunming Lake. As Yuan Dynasty was also the reign of an ethnic minority over the Han nationality, the emperor intended to acknow-ledge the great contributions made by Yelu Chucai to the Yuan Dynasty by restoring his tomb and ancestral temple. Undergoing the vicissitudes of the past hundreds of years, the ancestral emple houses only the tomb, three halls, a few stone status and a stele erected in the Emperor Qianlong's reign.
